Pleasant Valley Baptist Church

The Epistle of Jim

March 2004

I thank God for my spleen. Not that I really know what my spleen does, I had to look it up in the dictionary to find out. Webster’’s says the spleen is "a highly vascular ductless organ that is...concerned with final destruction of red blood cells, filtration and storage of blood, and production of lymphocytes." That makes it as clear as mud. Even though I still don’’t really understand what it does, I am sure that I would be in bad shape if my spleen were not operating properly.

Like the spleen, there are many members of the body of Christ that may go unnoticed, that may even do things that no one else really understands or knows is important, yet are vital to the health of the body. I thank God for these selfless people that go about serving the Lord in quiet ways.

Recently I received a very generous gift from a group of people who did not identify themselves. I am very grateful to them and to God for His provision through them. May God greatly bless these unknown servants. I also heard from a person who is not a member of our church that he was blessed by a couple from our church when he was in a crisis in his life. I thank God for these disciples who showed His love in such a meaningful and timely way.

I am also amazed when I think of all the things that happen around our church building and in our ministries that are done behind the scenes. There are many faithful servants who perform tasks that we may not notice. They are like the power company, we take them for granted until the power goes out and we realize how much we depend on them.

I thank God for the spleens and other unseen organs in our church. You know who you are even if the rest of us don’’t. But most importantly, God knows who you are and He knows of your service to him. "Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." (Matthew 6:4) May God bless the spleens!
